Gabala
Gabala's cable-car resort, climbing from the town into alpine meadows and ski slopes above.
Tufandag is the mountain resort directly above Gabala, reached by a cable car that climbs in stages from the base station to well above the treeline. In winter it is a ski area; the rest of the year it operates for the views, the walking and summer activities.
It is the single best way to understand the geography of this part of the Caucasus, because the ascent takes you through the vegetation zones in sequence.
The lift runs in stages, and each section changes the landscape. The lower run climbs through dense beech and hornbeam forest; the middle section opens out; the top station sits in alpine meadow above the treeline.
The final station looks back across the whole Gabala valley toward the plain, and on a clear day the view is genuinely long. The temperature drop between base and summit is significant — often ten degrees or more.
The full ascent takes around half an hour each way. Queues form at weekends and in the summer holidays.
In winter, Tufandag operates as a ski resort with runs for a range of abilities, equipment hire and instruction. The season typically runs from December into March or April depending on snow.
Outside the season it becomes a general mountain-activity resort: walking trails from the upper stations, zip lines, and simply the view. It is a legitimate stop in July as much as January, which is not true of every ski area.
Cable-car and activity tickets are bought at the resort and are not included in any of our packages.
Weather closes the lift with some regularity — high wind in particular. It is worth having a fallback in mind on a Gabala day, and Nohur Lake is the obvious one.
Not included: Entry tickets to all attractions, museums, cable cars and activity venues · Hotel / accommodation · Meals & drinks. Entry tickets are set by government authorities or venue operators and are payable directly on-site.
Yes. Outside the ski season the cable car runs for the views, and there are walking trails and zip lines from the upper stations. The staged ascent through forest into alpine meadow is worthwhile in any season.
Usually ten degrees or more colder than Gabala town at the base. Take a warm layer even on a hot summer day.
