Classic Car Museum

A collection of restored classic and Soviet-era vehicles displayed at the Heydar Aliyev Center.

The classic car collection at the Heydar Aliyev Center covers a broad span of twentieth-century motoring, with a particularly strong run of Soviet-era vehicles alongside restored Western classics.

It is a straightforward, enjoyable stop, and because it shares a site with Zaha Hadid's landmark building it requires no additional travel.

The Soviet vehicles

The Soviet marques are the most interesting part of the collection for most visitors, precisely because they are unfamiliar. GAZ, ZIL, Moskvitch and Volga models are all represented, including the heavy state limousines used by the Soviet leadership.

These are the cars that actually drove on Azerbaijani roads for most of the twentieth century, which gives them a relevance the Western classics do not have here.

Visiting

The collection sits within the Heydar Aliyev Center complex, so it combines naturally with the building itself — already a fixed stop on our Baku city tour.

Allow around 45 minutes. It works well as a break for anyone in the group who has had enough of political and cultural history for one day.

Highlights

  • Soviet marques — GAZ, ZIL, Moskvitch, Volga
  • State limousines used by the Soviet leadership
  • Restored Western classics
  • Same site as Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center
